Terms of Use for Media Partners

Media partners must credit the Journalistic Learning Initiative, the Student Voice Project, and the student journalist or creator by full name whenever content is published, aired, embedded, shared, or otherwise distributed.

Attribution should appear clearly on every platform where the content appears, including websites, newsletters, social media, print publications, video channels, podcasts, and broadcast segments.

For photo, video, audio, graphics, or data visualizations, credit should appear as close to the content as practical.

Student Voice Project content represents the work, voice, and perspective of student creators. Media partners may edit content for grammar, clarity, length, formatting, headline style, or publication style, but may not alter the meaning, substance, tone, or context of the student's work.

Media partners may add introductory language, local context, related reporting, photos, video, graphics, or other editorial elements, provided those additions are clearly distinguishable from the student-produced work and do not misrepresent the student's reporting, viewpoint, or intent.

Media partners agree to publish, air, or otherwise run corrections or clarifications when notified by the Journalistic Learning Initiative that a correction is necessary for Student Voice Project content they have used.

Corrections should be handled promptly and in a manner consistent with the media partner's normal correction policy.

Media partners may republish Student Voice Project text, photos, video, audio, graphics, and data visualizations when those materials are produced by JLI, participating students, educators, school partners, or approved public-domain sources.

Third-party copyrighted materials, including commercial wire service photos, stock images, music, video clips, or other externally licensed assets, may not be republished unless JLI expressly indicates that those materials are cleared for partner use.

Media partners are responsible for observing any restrictions noted on individual stories or media assets.

Media partners may use images, documents, data, or other materials from government agencies or public-domain sources when those materials are included with Student Voice Project content, provided proper attribution is maintained.

The Journalistic Learning Initiative and participating student creators retain ownership or applicable publication rights to JLI-produced and Student Voice Project content.

By downloading, embedding, publishing, airing, or otherwise using Student Voice Project content, media partners understand and agree that they receive no exclusive right to the content. JLI may publish, syndicate, archive, adapt, or authorize use of the same content by other partners.

Student Voice Project content is created to elevate student voice, strengthen civic learning, and support public understanding of issues that matter to young people and their communities.

Media partners agree to use this content in a manner consistent with that educational and civic purpose. Content may not be used in political advertising, commercial endorsements, fundraising campaigns, or other contexts that imply student, school, educator, or JLI endorsement of a candidate, product, service, organization, or cause without prior written permission.

JLI will make reasonable efforts to ensure that Student Voice Project content selected for public syndication has appropriate permissions for publication.

Media partners may not seek additional personal information from student creators, contact minors directly, or use student names, images, or biographical details beyond what is included in the published Student Voice Project content without prior written approval from JLI and, when applicable, the student's parent, guardian, school, or educator.

Student Voice Project content may include tracking technology, such as a tracking pixel or analytics link, that allows JLI to collect anonymized engagement metrics.

By publishing or embedding Student Voice Project content, media partners consent to JLI's use of this technology for monitoring reach, audience engagement, educational impact, and program evaluation.

JLI reserves the right to request that a media partner revise, correct, update, or remove Student Voice Project content if JLI determines that the content has been used inaccurately, without proper attribution, in a misleading context, in violation of student privacy, or outside the spirit of these terms.

Unless otherwise noted, the Journalistic Learning Initiative owns or administers publication rights for JLI-produced Student Voice Project content. Student creators retain appropriate credit, copyright, and recognition for their work.

When media partners publish Student Voice Project content, they agree to honor these terms and preserve the integrity, attribution, and educational purpose of the work.
